Single parenting tips: good and bad ideas for moving responsibilities to older siblings

Being a parent with a busy schedule isn’t easy, especially if that parent is raising the kids alone. It’s hard to balance taking care of kids, having a career, maintaining finances, and everything else that is necessary to sustain a household. Family members have to contribute their time and effort in order to keep the household running smoothly. When families work together, life is easier for everyone. Mom or dad certainly can’t do it alone.

The first step to attaining a smooth-running single parent household is the assignment of duties to family members. Even the youngest children can perform simple duties to help out. Preschoolers can be taught to pick up their toys, throw away trash, and empty wastepaper baskets. If children are expected to do these things as soon as they are old enough, they will have an understanding of the importance of cooperation. They will also be more likely to help out without being asked as they grow and mature.

Younger school-age children are capable of setting the table, feeding pets, drying dishes, emptying the dishwasher, dusting, and picking up after themselves. They should be given a list of weekly chores in which they are expected to complete within a specific timeframe.

Older children can help entertain younger siblings, wash dishes, pull weeds, rake leaves, sweep, vacuum, and help with laundry. They should also be expected to pick up after themselves and maintain a clean room. As soon as they are old enough to do these chores, they should be expected to do them on a regular basis.

Teenage children are capable of all of the aforementioned duties as well as meal preparation, bathroom cleaning, kitchen cleaning, floor washing, and lawn mowing. Although this sounds like a lot of work, these duties can be shared with siblings of similar age as well as with the parent.

As children become older and more capable, household chores can be passed on. Duties that were once required of older children should be handed down at the appropriate time. Have the older children instruct their younger siblings in the right way to accomplish these tasks. They are wonderful teachers and role models for younger brothers and sisters.

This plan sounds simple, but it’s not always easy to get family members to do what is expected of them. Make it clear that certain privileges will be taken away unless the required tasks are completed. Favorite toys and activities can be used as an incentive as well. Put what is expected of them in writing, and have them mark off the duties as they have been completed.

Not all parents believe in or are financially able to hand out weekly allowances. Children should contribute to the family without expecting monetary compensation, but they should be given extra time and attention for a job well done. One idea is to hand out weekly tokens or coupons that can be exchanged for time spent at a local park or turned in for special one-on-one time spent with a parent. This time could be spent playing a favorite board game, tossing a ball around, taking a walk, or going out for a special treat. Quality time is the most valuable incentive of all.

Making children accountable for daily and weekly chores will give them a sense of responsibility that will help mold them into dependable adults. It will give them a sense of worth and a feeling of pride when they are rewarded with the greatest payment of all – your thanks, praise, and special attention.

Parenting Tips: How to be a work at home mom

"I can't get any writing done because the kids are in my face!"

"I can't surf the net for my cash programs because the kids always want to play a computer game."

"How do I run these transcription projects downtown with three kids in tow?"

These are the dilemmas an increasing number of parents face who work from home. The cost of childcare is prohibitive, especially for more than one child. With more children diagnosed with disorders such as autism and ADHD, parents want to be at home with their special needs children after school.

The Internet is bursting with home based business opportunities and freelance or outsourced work. It seems like a dream: regaining some of the income lost when one parent goes to work but still being able to have a stay at home parent for the kids.

For some parents, however, it seems like a nightmare after a few weeks. Children need attention but the work at home parent needs a few hours each day to work.

Here are some tips, arranged by age group.

Infants and Toddlers

* Take advantage of their earlier bedtimes to get some busy work done in the evenings.

* If your work involves the computer, you CAN learn to type with a toddler on your lap. Keep wandering hands busy with a toy, bottle or sippy cup.

* Children age 2 and up can spend short bursts of time playing near your workspace.

* Keep a few small toys or board books in a desk drawer and use them only for times when you are working so they seem like a novelty

* Join or start a cooperative playgroup in your neighborhood with at least six children where two mothers take all of the children once or twice per week for an hour or hour and a half on a rotating schedule.

Preschoolers, age 3-5

* Clear off a corner of your workspace for your preschooler to color in coloring books or draw pictures on plain paper. Many preschoolers love the idea of "working" along with a parent at their desk.

* Keep a drawer or box near your workspace with books, paper, crayons, colored pencils, clay, or other creative materials

* Keep dry cereal, juice boxes, individual sized packages of graham cracker snacks, goldfish crackers, canned fruit cups, and other nutritious snacks handy so your children can help themselves to their morning and afternoon snack

* Add variety to the day by allowing short videos or TV breaks, and try to place your workspace near a window where you can watch your child play outside in the yard while you work.

School Age 6 and up.

* After school or on weekends have your preteen sit near your workspace and do homework while you work. If you are doing "busy work" where you can work and converse at the same time, use the time to catch up on your child's day.

* If you need a block of uninterrupted time, set up an informal coop arrangement with other neighborhood parents to host playdates or video film festival afternoons on days off from school and reclaim some of the days formerly filled with wails of "I'm bored."

* Set up a housework/special time coop arrangement with your older children. If they complete certain household chores for you, thus freeing up more time for your work, you will spend "special time" with them on a certain activity of their choice: riding bicycles or inline skating, going out for ice cream or sharing an order of french fries, seeing a movie, or anything else they choose for which you are willing to treat them.

With some ingeniuity on your part, and cooperation on your children's part, working at home can work for the whole family.

How to be a better mom: 5 parenting tips

Becoming a mother brings a range of roles that any stage or film actress might envy. Nurse, teacher, administrator, chauffeur, and coach are just some of the many duties a typical mom may have to perform.

But if you are a new mom or someone who is a little confused about the type of parent a mother should be, here are a few basic guidelines that may help you become a more effective mother:

1. Have integrity. From an early age, kids look up to their parents as role models and even heroes. They will learn many of their attitudes, language patterns, and behaviors from observing you. As you go about the daily events of your life, make values-based decisions. Your children need to see you respond to others in a consistent, honorable way. When you treat others with respect, they will too. If you are kind and polite, expect it from the kids as well. Integrity is perhaps the most important quality a parent can model.

2. Set good standards. Expect your kids to try hard at school, to treat authorities with courtesy, and to follow parental guidelines. When you lower the bar or issue contradictory mandates, the kids will become confused and possibly get off track. Clearly explain what you want them to do, and if applicable, tell them why. Start when they are young and they will never know to do anything else until they become teens and are exposed to other ideas and examples.

3. Be fair. Treat all your children in the same manner without favoring one over another. Be consistent in setting rules as well as issuing rewards and punishments. Kids quickly sense hypocrisy or favoritism, so do your best to treat them all the same. Don't say one thing and do another; rather, set the example as far as following the same rules yourself.

4. Have fun with them. Be sure to include time for play in your schedule. From tots to teens, your children love to see Mom laugh, and they are delighted when that laughter includes them. Read together, tell jokes, talk over the school day, wash dishes together, bathe the dog, shoot hoops, take a drive, have a milk shake. As they grow older, plan individual outings with each child to talk over dinner or go bowling, for example. Kids love being part of a family, but they want to know they matter as individuals, too.

5. Honor their father. Perhaps the greatest gift you can give your children is the gift of family security. When they see you kiss Dad or avoid a sharp argument, you reinforce their notion of unconditional love and relational forgiveness. They, in turn, will learn to base their future marriages on similar principles. Even if their father no longer lives in the home due to divorce or death, talk about him courteously, point out his good qualities, and mention the problem behaviors only when you must.

Moms play a pivotal role in children's development. Take time to reflect on your many opportunities to make family life meaningful and fun. Kids grow up quickly, and you won't get a second chance.

Career tips for women: choosing the right shoes and purse for a job interview

With everything there is to worry about with a job interview, having to worry about accessorizing can drive you to near madness. Do these shoes go with this outfit? Are they making the wrong statement? What if my purse doesn't match? Does it even matter? Thankfully, the basics of interview dressing still apply - Tasteful, understated and trying to give a composed impression. And yes, your choices can matter.

Shoes

While the four inch heels you went out dancing in last night may cost more than your television set and they make your legs look fantastic, they aren't what you're looking for when you need shoes for an interview. You want to go with a simple dress shoe that matches the rest of your interview outfit. For example, this could be a boot (with pants) or a low heel (with a skirt). The idea is that you are the one who is supposed to shine, not your footwear. Also, keep in mind that you may have to deal with staircases, walking through areas and other situations where your footwear might make a difference. Wincing at the wrong moment due to a pinching pointy toe may give a hiring manager the impression that you are not interested in the job. An interview is also not the time to break in a new pair of shoes, although shoes should still look neat and clean.

Purses

To purse or not to purse, is that the question? It is often hard to figure out what to do with a purse during an interview. If you are bringing along a briefcase or portfolio for an interview, you can often use it stash the things you'll need like your wallet, identification and a small make-up bag for touch ups. If you do bring a purse, you would want to follow the rules again and go with something tasteful and understated. It should match the color of your shoes. Try to keep away from purses that are very large are bulky. You don’t want to be fumbling with a purse that is half your size when you go to shake someone’s hand. Also, you should make an effort to clean our your purse or briefcase before the interview. If you need to find something in it during the interview, it can be distracting and also give a negative impression if you need to look for an extended time or pull things out to find what you need. Take time the night before your interview to consider what you need to bring, and what you do not need to bring, to the interview.

Why it matters

While your purse and shoes may be small details that should never make or break an interview for most women, they do deserve some attention. In an interview where you are up against other people for a position, small details like how you handle yourself can make the difference between getting the position or a "thanks but no thanks" from the employer. Knowing these little details are under control, you can go into a job interview more confident and able to focus on giving the best impression to the potential employer.

Woman Stress: Stress Management Tips For Women

All women have their own method of relieving stress. Some methods are healthier than others. You may have adopted your stress relief strategies from your parents. You may have adopted it from your culture, such as yoga or Zen. Both of these methods are excellent ways of relieving stress.

Yoga is a great way to not only manage stress, but also strengthen and tone your body with its stretching and flexing. With Zen, on the other hand, you quiet your body and meditate, or focus your mind on a single thing. What you meditate on is determined by your own convictions.

Other tried and true woman stress management practices include deep breathing exercise, light physical exercise (such as taking a 15 minute walk), reading, getting out into nature, and listening to your favorite music. Some people may prefer their favorite recreational activity such as playing a round of bingo or a few rounds of bowling. Others choose less healthy activities such as binge eating, drinking alcohol, or smoking. While these methods of stress management may certainly reduce a person’s stress, they may cause other health problems. Other, less well-known, stress management methods include hypnosis or acupuncture, which may only be administered by a professional who can be easily found with an Internet or yellow pages search.

When you decide that relieving your stress level is what has to be done, consult your doctor. He or she will be able to determine whether your chosen method will be the best for you, and any adverse effects will then be discussed. Your physician may prescribe medication for you if you are at a risk for other problems. What you do not want to do is nothing at all. Continually high stress levels put people at risk for problems such as heart attack and stroke.

Maintaining a relaxed body and mind is the first step in being able to manage stress well. Everyone has stress in their lives, and there are just as many therapies to reduce that stress. Being able to adequately manage the stress in one’s life can help you improve your mental and physical health.

Mom stress occurs every day but little attention is given to it. Its just considered part of mothering. But there is help available because moms need stress relief just like everyone else. For new mom stress management tips visit: www.momstressrelief.com

Work at Home Moms: Best Time Management Tips

Working from home provides tremendous advantages for a mom. You're able to set your own schedule, bag the stockings and read at the preschool. You can nap when you're tired or call a friend. What a life!

But challenges also abound. It's almost impossible to work without childcare. The more you're in the house, the messier it seems; domestic projects call from every corner. The mail carrier may be nice, but he's not a colleague. And nobody is looking over your shoulder to make sure the job gets done.

To thrive as a work-at-home mom, you need to set guidelines. What follows are time management tips gleaned from my experience writing from home as the mother of two girls, now 5 and 8.

*Establish boundaries. Don't allow the kids in your office without permission. I set this rule early, and as a result I can always find my stapler. I cannot say the same thing for my hairbrush or lipstick.

*Set a schedule. Notice how your preschooler needs structure? So do you. A regular work routine will help keep you from getting sidetracked by daytime TV.

*Buy a stopwatch. I click my stopwatch on to write and click it off when I leave my desk. At day's end, I log my work hours. Tracking time keeps me focused and helps separate "work" from "home."

*Keep a "small stuff" to do list. Working at home allows you to use spare moments for office work. But to be efficient, you need to keep a list of tasks that can be done in 15 minutes or less.

*Stash toys. I keep a basket of toys in my office for special occasions. Since the kids don't use them regularly, the toys have novelty value. The basket buys me an hour of work time on my children's sick days.

*Distinguish breaks. Two hours spent cleaning the playroom is not a break, it's a morning. Start the day with work, not chores. Keep breaks short, work hours long. Ignore the dust bunnies.

*Set the handyman straight. Chat and then make it clear that you have to go back to work. Tell him that you're on a deadline -- even if you're not. He'll get more work done, and so will you.

*Get out. Working at home can be isolating. Schedule events that require you to wear clean clothes and interact with adults who are not relatives, contractors or delivery people.

*Know thyself. It's confusing. You're a working mother but you're mostly around stay-at-home moms. Deadlines call, but you're constantly asked to volunteer. Consider your work commitments before accepting outside obligations. Remember, you're a working mom, even if you don't commute.

*Take advantage. What's the point of working at home if you don't enjoy the perks? Sneak in a siesta. Check in on Oprah. Shop for shoes. Celebrate the "free" in freelance, and the "independent" in independent contractor!

Makeup Tips for Teenagers

The teenage period is the most enjoyable and even the most difficult time for certain youngsters. This is the time, one goes into high school and often remains confused whether one is actually a kid or a grown up. Often one may feel they do not belong to any of the two categories and this is what makes most teens feel even worse. Restrictions and more restrictions! Do not party too much, wear less makeup and concentrate on your studies-I am sure most people would be familiar with these lines! Well, whether our folks like it or not, I am sure most teens love to wear makeup. Teen makeup for me was only during inter-college festivals and special functions hosted in the college itself. I always wished someone had special sessions for makeup tips for teenagers. That would have saved me a lot of hassle and at least I would not have looked like someone has poured all the colors of the rainbow on my face! This piece is especially for those teens that are seeking for some teen makeup tips to look stunning for that happening night out with the cute guy next door! A word of warning for grown ups- Keep Out!

Makeup Tips for Teenagers:
Ok, so you are not blessed with the best skin and already have a pimple a day before the party. No need to panic, that’s what teen makeup is all about. One thing I would like to mention here though, you must avoid using make up on a daily basis, as it would simply harm your skin in the long run.

* For girls who need to brighten up their skin, firstly you need follow a good skin care routine. Use a deep cleanser to remove all the oils and traces of makeup every night. Use a gentle scrub once in a while to get rid of dull skin. I know you would be crazy about foundations, but teens don’t actually need to use foundation. Please leave that to the grown ups. If you are having spots or marks, use a concealer to hide the problem areas. Use tinted bronze shades that can add to the natural glow of your skin. Apply this on the cheeks, forehead, chin and the nose. This would help you achieve a sun kissed look. Use some loose powder to even out the uneven texture of the skin.
* Go in for eye makeup only for parties at night. You can begin with a light eye shadow to cover the eyelid. Then take a slightly darker eye shadow and cover the area towards the top of the eyelid. Choose shades that suit your skin tone or you can go in for shades that match your outfit. Be careful of zany shades such as blue as it may tend to make you look pale. Apply a black/brown liner to the eyelid and apply some kohl under your eyes to give them definition. This would help you bring attention to your eyes. Finish with a coat of mascara to your eyelashes. This would help in making your eyes appear wider.
* If you need to define your eyebrows than go in for an eyebrow pencil that is a shade lighter than your natural shade of the brows. Use an eyebrow comb to brush it out evenly.
* Makeup tips for teenagers can never be complete without a blusher. The blusher helps to add to the warmth of the skin and can also help to liven up the look. For a chiseled look, dab some blusher a little below your cheekbones. Use the blusher in an outward direction if you want your eyes to appear wider.
* Lipsticks are probably high on the must haves on most teens. Always use a lip liner so that you can define your lips well. Use natural shades for the day and dark shades for the night. Nude shades work best for a sun kissed look in the morning hours. Top it with loads of gloss for haughty lips. You also need to keep the lipstick shade in co-ordination with your eye shadow. Both have to be on similar lines. Light shades also help to make your lips appear fuller.
* Highlighters help to bring more attention to specific areas of the face. Use a silver highlighter under your brow to jazz up the eyes.

Some factors to consider for Teen Makeup:

* Ensure you have the right brushes for the makeup application. This would help you blend it well.
* Always test the foundation or products that you have not regularly used to know how your skin would react. This would help you avoid any hassles later.
* Clean your makeup brushes once you are done. Do not leave any color on them for a long period of time.
* Avoid heavy makeup and also ensure you clean the face once you come home from the party.

Well, teen makeup should be used to enhance your features. Remember, you must not depend on this to be truly beautiful. Always eat right and be happy. This is bound to reflect in your face!
